Do You Trust the Tie Rods and Track Rods on Your Truck?

While every wheel on a commercial vehicle has to endure a certain amount of wear and tear due to the weight of the vehicle and the forces involved, the front wheels have to put up with the most. They need to be able to pivot as well as roll, and when they turn at a particularly slow speed, this will generate a tremendous amount of friction and force. Many individual parts have to put up with this tension, but some have to be stronger than most. Why do you need to ensure, therefore, that the tie rods and track rods on your heavy-duty truck are always in good condition?

Manoeuvrability

While a vehicle like this may spend a lot of time driving in a straight line on the open road, a driver may also have to manoeuvre it very slowly in a confined space during delivery. A lot of force is needed to turn an average wheel-and-tyre combination in this scenario, and the driver can certainly benefit from power-assisted steering. However, other parts connect the steering rack to the road wheel, and they have to deal with movement in every dimension, as well as resistance.

Parts Under Pressure

A tie rod connects the end of the steering rack to the track rod end. It can be adjusted by a technician so that the alignment is correct, and it will typically feature a ball joint so that it can move in relation to the rack itself. The track rod end is connected to the hub on one side and the tie rod on the other. This part features a very heavy-duty ball joint that will allow the wheel to go up, down, right or left while the rest of the structure is relatively static.

Warning Signs

When any of these components begin to go bad, the driver will notice an increased amount of vibration through the steering wheel. They may also hear strange noises in the vicinity of the road wheel as the bushing begins to wear out.

Failure

If any of these parts were to fail completely, this would typically happen during a slow-speed, high-stress manoeuvre. However, a complete failure at speed could be disastrous, and it's very important, therefore, to keep a close eye on the parts' conditions.

Replacement

If you need to replace tie rods, track rods or any associated parts, always ensure that you get the best quality replacements.

A Lifelong Hobby

When I was a kid, I used to live a few doors down from a garage run by a guy called Alfredo. It was a proper old-fashioned garage, like something out of an old movie: He did everything by hand and took great pride in his work. I hung around there as much as I could get away with, and I learned a lot about cars just by watching them all at work. Eventually, once I turned about 14, he hired me for a weekend job. I didn't keep up that line of work once I left for college, but I've carried the passion behind it with me into adulthood. These days I work alone building and improving my rides rather than fixing other people's, and I figured it was about time I shared some of what I've learned about parts and maintenance.
